YOUTH ENCOURAGED TO BUILD CHILDREN’S SELF-ESTEEM AND EMBRACE HEALTHY LIVING

Youth members attending the Youth Convention currently underway at Bishop Patteson Theological College (BPTC), Kohimarama, have been encouraged to play an active role in nurturing children’s self-esteem and adopting healthier lifestyles for a better future.

The session was facilitated by Mr Mark Tehe, a retired nurse, health promoter, health education officer, and former lecturer at the former Solomon Islands College of Higher Education (SICHE). He was assisted by Mr Roy Oeta, Health Coordinator at the Anglican Church of Melanesia (ACoM) Headquarters.

During the presentation, participants discussed the topic, “How Can We Help Children with Low Self-Esteem?” in small groups before sharing their reflections and recommendations with the wider gathering.

Among the key points highlighted were the importance of avoiding comparisons between children and others, recognizing that the way adults speak to children has a significant impact on their confidence and self-worth. Participants also stressed the need to guide children in choosing positive friendships, listen to and value their opinions, and spend quality time with them at home.

Parents were further encouraged to pray regularly with their children and create supportive family environments that foster emotional, spiritual, and personal growth.

Addressing the gathering, Mr Tehe emphasized the importance of making healthy lifestyle choices from a young age.

“Change your lifestyle now while you’re still young,” he urged.

He explained that many modern health issues are linked to changing lifestyles and eating habits, encouraging participants to learn from the healthier practices of previous generations.

“If you want to enjoy a long life like your grandparents, go back to how they ate in the past,” Mr Tehe said.

The presentation formed part of the convention’s ongoing efforts to promote health and wellbeing among young people, highlighting the strong connection between physical health, emotional wellbeing, and healthy family relationships.

Participants expressed appreciation for the session, describing it as both informative and practical. They said the lessons shared would help them make positive changes in their daily lives and support the wellbeing of their families and communities.
