POSITIVE PARENTING FACILITATORS AND REFRESHER TRAINING CURRENTLY UNDER WAY AT GOOD SHEPHARD

A transformative ‘Positive Parenting Facilitators and Refresher Training’ is currently underway at Good Shepherd, North Guadalcanal, organized by the Provincial Mothers Union Office and the Diocesan Mothers Union Office of the Diocese of Guadalcanal. The workshop, attended by 24 participants including women, men, and youth leaders from Lunga, Ghueora, and Gaobata parishes, aims to equip participants who will become facilitators with skills to address critical family and social issues through the Positive Parenting Program.
According to Mrs. Denise Bako, a lead trainer of the weeklong workshop and Mothers Union President in the Diocese of Central Melanesia said, the training focuses on equipping participants with skills to address family and social challenges using the Positive Parenting Program, a global initiative of the Mothers Union.
The aim is to train the participants who will later implement or facilitate the program in their parishes, promoting stable, faith-filled, and nurturing family environments.
Topics include family cycles, behavior change, developmental stages of children (from conception to age nine), building relationships, and child protection.
The training methodology incorporates participatory learning actions like icebreakers, group activities, and problem-solving exercises.
Highlighting the overview of the Positive Parenting program, the Provincial Mothers Union President Mrs. Rollands highlighted the program’s role in tackling pressing social issues rooted in family challenges.
“Positive Parenting Program was Introduced to the Mothers Union in ACoM in 2011 by the Worldwide President of the Mothers Union, the program addresses issues such as domestic violence, child abuse, substance abuse, and broken families. It has been rolled out in dioceses including Central Melanesia, Ysabel, Central Solomon’s, and Temotu”. She said.
The program promotes community conditions that support family stability and child protection.
Mrs. Abelyn Sade, Vice President of the Mothers Union in the Diocese of Guadalcanal, expressed her gratitude for the training and hopes for its successful implementation in parishes.
She expects participants to go back to their respective parishes and communities and implement the program, empowering families, young couples, and youth to take ownership of their development.
The Positive Parenting Training and Refresher Workshop at Good Shepherd, North Guadalcanal, marks a significant step toward strengthening families and communities in the diocese. By equipping facilitators with essential tools, the Mothers Union continues its mission to foster resilient, faith-filled, and nurturing environments for children and families across Melanesia. The workshop is expected to conclude with participants fully prepared to drive positive change in their communities. The weeklong workshop will be facilitated by Mrs. Denise Bako supported by Sandra Rollands and Mini Kiriau from the Provincial Mothers Union office in Honiara.
